Scouting Trips for Summer 2018

posted Jan 19, 2018, 10:17 AM by Paoli 181   [ updated Jan 19, 2018, 10:35 AM ]

We will have three scouting trips this summer and we wanted to get some preliminary information out to all parents. We also want to get a reasonable headcount soon for two of the trips (Medium and High Adventure) for planning purposes, so please reach out to the appropriate trip organizer if you or your scout plans to attend. More detailed information will be posted later at our website: http://www.paoli181.org/

Please note that parents are welcome on any scouting trip, but they must first go through the required Youth Protection Training (YPT) and background checks. For more details, go to http://www.cccbsa.org/PABackgroundChecks

Camp Horseshoe, July 1–8

Like every summer for the past several decades, Paoli 181 will be doing summer camp at Camp Horseshoe near Rising Sun, MD. This is a wonderful opportunity for scouts to work on rank advancement, merit badges, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow scouts from troops throughout the region.

The cost is $405 per scout with early registration. Adults attend for free; Troop 181 will pay for their costs.  If you have questions, please contact our summer camp coordinator, John Wang: hy96wang@yahoo.com  or 570-977-4771

High Adventure—Maine Canoe Trip, July 15–21

As we do every year, our more senior scouts will be doing High Adventure, this time canoeing on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway with the outfitter Maine High Adventure. We will drive roughly 10 hours July 15 to our destination and will be back July 21.

Scouts MUST be 13 years old by September 1, 2018, and they MUST attain First Class rank before the High Adventure trip. (Please note that Scoutmaster Shreve has the final say on who can go on High Adventure, as the BSA requires the scoutmaster to certify that the scouts are physically and emotionally mature enough to handle the challenges.)

We need between 7 and 11 people (scouts and adults). Total cost will be about $650 each person. We will only need to bring personal gear. The outfitter will supply all camp and canoe equipment as well as food.

The first night will be at the base camp; the other five nights will be spent camping along the waterways in the Maine wilderness. An experienced guide will accompany our group for the entire trip.

Medium Adventure—Rafting & Biking at Hickory Run State Park, July 26–29

For the first time we are providing a “Medium Adventure” trip that gives a flavor of High Adventure but open to scouts of all ages/ranks and their parents. Departure will be Thursday, July 26 (time TBD) from Berwyn United Methodist Church (BUMC) for roughly a 2-hour drive to Hickory Run State Park, PA, and returning around noon Sunday, July 29.

Activities will include rafting down the Lehigh River on Friday, and biking down the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail on Saturday. The biking trail is mostly flat and downhill; we will likely do 25 miles, but shorter and longer options are available. Bicycles will be provided at the site. In addition there are options for orienteering, fishing, hiking, disc golf, and other activities before or after rafting/biking.

We will be tent camping and cooking meals at the camp site.  Anticipated cost is roughly $100 to 150 per scout to cover food, rafting, biking, shuttles, and camp site fees. This event is for scouts and parents only.

If interested, email the names of those planning to attend (scouts and parents, if applicable) by January 31 to Tony Dill:  Anthony.Dill@arcadis.com.
