Paddling and Cycling Family Day Trip, Oct 4, 2020

Post date: Sep 25, 2020 12:39:11 AM

Scouts and family members are all welcome to kayak or canoe 5 miles down the Schuylkill River, then bike back on the Schuylkill River Trail. Trip will be roughly 4 hours on Sunday, October 4, including commuting time to and from Pottstown, PA.

We will meet 12:15 PM at the back parking lot of BUMC near the supply shed and leave at 12:30 p.m. Those who plan to go directly to the outfitter in Pottstown should be there by 1 PM. (See the fact sheet for the address.) We should be back by 5 p.m.

Cost is $32 for a solo kayak and $52 for a canoe or tandem kayak. Prices assume we will have at least 20 participants to qualify for the 20% group discount.

Non-swimmers or those under age 12 must go in a canoe or tandem kayak with a parent or older sibling. Everyone needs to bring a safety helmet for bicycling. You can bring a bicycle or borrow one under the “Bike Pottstown Initiative” but the latter has ONLY adult-size bikes. We suggest adults borrow bikes but bring bikes for children who cannot ride adult-size bikes. (The outfitter will transport children’s bikes to the midway point between the two legs of the trip, but they will not transport your adult bikes.)

Please read the attached trip fact sheet for more details. If you and your family members plan to go, please RSVP in the sign up form below by September 29.

The second page of the fact sheet attachment is the troop consent and release form. Please fill out the consent form, sign it, and bring to the scout meeting on September 29, along with a check made out to “Troop 181” for the cost of the boat rental. If you want to pay through the Venmo app instead, we will send out instructions via a separate email. There is a separate waiver form for the outfitter that you need to fill online:

Social distancing will be observed as a precaution against COVID-19. Scouts will travel with their parents. There will be no carpooling, unless the scouts were already in regular contact with each other. Please bring a mask for those occasions when social distancing can’t observed.

This will be our first troop trip since the pandemic hit. Let’s make it a safe and enjoyable one.
